testosterone-support
Testosterone Support

What this is. A herbal blend taken by men for energy, drive and training output. It does not contain hormones.

500 mg of horny goat weed extract, 200 mg of fenugreek, 200 mg of L-citrulline DL-malate and 100 mg of nettle, in one capsule. The name on the front is the shelf this sits on. We are not going to make a testosterone claim for it, because nothing in this formula has human evidence for raising testosterone.

What you are actually getting, per 1 capsule

Horny Goat Weed Extract (ratio and icariin content not stated) — 500 mg

Fenugreek (no standardisation stated) — 200 mg

L-Citrulline DL-Malate (ratio not stated) — 200 mg

Nettle (root or leaf not stated) — 100 mg

Three of those four lines are missing the figure that would let you judge them. Horny goat weed is sold on its icariin content, and this extract carries neither a ratio nor an icariin percentage. Fenugreek trials use standardised extracts, and this line has no standardisation. Citrulline malate is citrulline bonded to malic acid, so with no ratio stated the citrulline itself is less than 200 mg by an amount the panel does not give. Nettle root and nettle leaf are used for different things, and the panel does not say which this is.

Worth knowing before you buy

Fenugreek is the ingredient here with the most human research behind it, and those trials use 500 mg to 600 mg a day of a standardised extract. This capsule has 200 mg, unstandardised. Even setting the standardisation aside, it is under half of what the studies use — and the results of those studies are mixed rather than settled, which is worth knowing before you conclude that 600 mg would have been the answer.

For the other three, the honest position is that there is no human trial we could point you at. Horny goat weed at 500 mg is the largest thing in the capsule and the one with the least human evidence attached to it. Nettle at 100 mg is a small amount of a herb more usually seen in prostate formulas. Citrulline at 200 mg is a long way under the 6 g to 8 g that citrulline research uses, and citrulline is not a testosterone ingredient in any case.

So: no testosterone claim, from this label or from us. If you think your testosterone is low, that is a blood test taken in the morning and a conversation with a doctor. Low energy, low mood, poor sleep and low libido have a long list of possible causes and most of them are not testosterone. Nothing on this panel will change a blood test.

What it is: four botanicals and an amino acid in a single capsule, with the largest ingredient being the least evidenced. What it is not: a testosterone product, whatever the category it is filed under is called.

How to take it

One capsule a day with water. Thirty capsules in the bottle, so one a day is 30 days.

Other ingredients

The panel we have does not carry an other-ingredients line, so we cannot tell you what the capsule shell is made of. Gelatin shells are animal-derived and are not suitable for vegetarians or vegans; cellulose and HPMC shells are. We are not going to guess which this is — if it matters to you, read the physical bottle before you take it. One allergen note the panel does not make: fenugreek is a legume, and people with peanut or chickpea allergy can react to it.

Cautions

Fenugreek lowers blood glucose, so it interacts with insulin, metformin and other diabetes medicines, and it may add to the effect of anticoagulant and antiplatelet medicines such as warfarin. It is not recommended in pregnancy, because it has historically been used to stimulate contractions. It also makes some people's sweat and urine smell of maple syrup, which is harmless but surprising. Citrulline interacts with medicines that affect blood pressure, with nitrates, and with erectile dysfunction medicines such as sildenafil and tadalafil. Nettle may interact with diuretics, with blood pressure medicines, with diabetes medicines and with lithium. Horny goat weed may affect blood pressure and platelet function. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not use if the safety seal is damaged or missing. Store in a cool, dry place. Do not exceed the recommended dose. If you are pregnant, nursing, under 18, taking prescription medication or living with a medical condition, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting this or any supplement.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
