Collagen Protein

What this is. Hydrolysed collagen — the protein that makes up skin, hair, nails, joints and connective tissue. Taken daily in a drink for skin and joint support.

This is chicken collagen — chicken bone broth and hydrolysed chicken collagen — not bovine and not marine. It gives 13 g of protein per 14 g scoop. If you came looking for beef hide or fish collagen, this is not it, and that is the first thing you should know.

What you are actually getting, per 1 scoop (14 g)

  • Chicken Bone Broth — amount not stated separately
  • Hydrolyzed Chicken Collagen — amount not stated separately
  • Protein — 13 g
  • Calories — 50
  • Cholesterol — 1 mg
  • Sodium — 125 mg
  • Potassium — 180 mg

13 g of protein out of a 14 g scoop is about 93% protein by weight, which is a clean figure for a collagen powder. What the panel does not do is split the 14 g between the bone broth and the hydrolysed collagen, so we cannot tell you how much of each you are getting.

The panel also gives no type I, type II or type III breakdown. Plenty of collagen labels print one. This one does not, so we will not invent percentages to fill the gap.

Worth knowing before you buy

Chicken-sourced collagen is less studied than the alternatives. Most collagen peptide research uses bovine or marine hydrolysates, typically at 2.5 to 10 g a day. The 13 g here is a real, substantial amount by that standard — the caveat is the source and the missing type breakdown, not the size of the scoop.

Collagen is also not a complete protein. It is very low in tryptophan. The 13 g figure is true, and it is not interchangeable with 13 g of whey, egg or meat protein. If you are counting protein towards a daily target, count this one with that in mind.

This is not marine collagen and there is no fish in it. It is also not suitable for vegetarians or vegans under any reading — it is made from chicken. If you avoid poultry, for allergy or any other reason, this is the wrong tub.

How to take it

One 14 g scoop stirred into water, coffee or a smoothie, once a day. Thirty scoops in the tub, so one a day is 30 days.

Other ingredients

Chicken Bone Broth, Hydrolyzed Chicken Collagen. That is the complete ingredient list — the panel lists no sweetener, flavouring, colour or anti-caking agent. There is no capsule, so there is no gelatin question to answer. It is made from chicken and is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. No fish, shellfish or milk ingredient is listed on the panel.

Cautions

If you have a poultry allergy, do not take this. There are no well-documented drug interactions for collagen peptides. If you have kidney disease or have been advised to limit protein, the 13 g a serving counts towards your daily total, so speak to your doctor first. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not use if the safety seal is damaged or missing. Store in a cool, dry place. Do not exceed the recommended dose. If you are pregnant, nursing, under 18, taking prescription medication or living with a medical condition, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting this or any supplement.
