Vitamin D with Magnesium

What this is. Vitamin D3 with magnesium in one capsule. D is the one most people in northern states are short of in winter; magnesium is involved in using it.

2,000 IU of vitamin D3 in one capsule, with 31 mg of magnesium alongside it. Read that second number carefully: this is vitamin D with magnesium, not a magnesium supplement, and 31 mg is 7% of the Daily Value.

What you are actually getting, per capsule

  • Vitamin D3 (as cholecalciferol) — 50 mcg, which is 2,000 IU (250% of the Daily Value)
  • Magnesium (as magnesium citrate) — 31 mg (7% of the Daily Value)

Worth knowing before you buy

The vitamin D side of this is a straightforward everyday dose. 2,000 IU is a common maintenance amount and it sits well under the 4,000 IU daily upper limit for adults. Check your multivitamin before you add it, though — vitamin D stacks, and multis often already carry 600 to 1,000 IU.

The magnesium is the part bottles like this one usually blur. 31 mg against a Daily Value of 420 mg is a supporting amount, and it is there because magnesium is involved in how the body handles vitamin D. It is not a magnesium dose in any meaningful sense. If you are short on magnesium, or taking it for sleep or muscle cramps, buy magnesium on its own — a real magnesium capsule runs 200 to 400 mg, six to twelve times what is in here.

So: buy this if you want 2,000 IU of D3 and you like that a little magnesium rides along. Do not buy it expecting to have covered magnesium.

How to take it

One capsule daily with 6–8 oz of water. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so take it with a meal that has some fat in it. 30 capsules — a 30-day supply.

Other ingredients

Gelatin capsule.

The capsule is gelatin, so this one is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.

Cautions

Speak to your doctor before taking vitamin D if you have kidney disease, high blood calcium, or a condition such as sarcoidosis, and if you take a thiazide diuretic or digoxin. Magnesium can interfere with the absorption of some antibiotics, so separate them by a couple of hours.

Keep out of the reach of children. Do not use if the safety seal is damaged or missing. Store in a cool, dry place. Do not exceed the recommended dose. If you are pregnant, nursing, under 18, taking prescription medication or living with a medical condition, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting this or any supplement.
