What it's for

Candida albicans is a yeast that already lives in the gut, mouth and skin of most healthy people. A real candida infection — oral thrush, recurrent vaginal thrush, invasive candidiasis — is a medical diagnosis with a medical treatment. The broader idea sold online, that unrecognised "candida overgrowth" causes fatigue, brain fog and bloating in otherwise well people, is not a recognised diagnosis and does not have good evidence behind it. What is actually inside these bottles is a herbal blend — usually caprylic acid, oregano, berberine, garlic or black walnut. Several of those kill yeast in a petri dish. That is a long way from doing anything measurable in a person.

• Follow the label serving, with food
• If you have actual symptoms — oral thrush, a recurrent infection, a rash that will not clear — see a doctor. Those are treatable, and this is not the treatment
• Oregano oil and berberine are hard on an empty stomach. Food helps
• Berberine interacts with a long list of prescription medicines, including blood thinners and diabetes drugs. Read the panel against your prescriptions
• Not while pregnant or nursing
