What it's for

Plant sterols are the rare supplement ingredient with a genuinely well-supported mechanism: they are structurally close enough to cholesterol to compete with it for absorption in the gut, so less dietary cholesterol gets through. Health authorities in several countries recognise a cholesterol-lowering claim for them, and the dose that earns it is 1.5 to 3 grams a day. One serving here is 1.5 grams — the bottom of that range. The rest of the 3600 mg is a mixed botanical blend with far thinner evidence.

How to take it

• Take it with a meal containing fat. Plant sterols work by competing for absorption, so they need food arriving alongside them — taken on an empty stomach they do very little

• Sterols can slightly reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and carotenoids. Keep eating vegetables
• Tell your doctor you are taking it, and do not reduce or stop a prescribed statin or other lipid medication on your own
• Not for people with sitosterolaemia, a rare inherited condition
