Lutein and zeaxanthin accumulate specifically in the macula, the central part of the retina, where they act as a natural blue-light filter and antioxidant. Supplementation measurably raises macular pigment density. What that means for how well you see is a slower and much smaller story than the marketing suggests — the large AREDS2 trial did not find that adding lutein and zeaxanthin improved its primary outcome.
