What it's for
Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant your body already makes in small amounts, and unusually it works in both water- and fat-based environments, which is why it gets called a universal antioxidant. Its best-studied use is in glucose metabolism and nerve comfort, mostly from European trials using intravenous and high oral doses. It also regenerates other antioxidants — vitamins C and E — back to their active forms.
How to take it
- One capsule daily on an empty stomach — food reduces absorption noticeably
- Thirty minutes before a meal, or two hours after, is the usual window
- It can lower blood sugar. If you take insulin or another diabetes medication, talk to your prescriber before starting
- May reduce thyroid hormone absorption. Space it several hours from levothyroxine
- Some people get a faint rash or an odd smell to their urine. Both are harmless
