Osterly Market Artichoke Extract 500 mg
500 mg artichoke leaf extract. One ingredient, stated.
Artichoke leaf extract on its own, at a stated dose, for bile flow and digestion after fatty meals.
What it's for
Artichoke leaf is a choleretic — it increases bile production, and bile is what emulsifies fat so you can digest it. That mechanism is well established, and it is why artichoke has been used for centuries for the heavy, uncomfortable feeling after a rich meal. Trials in functional dyspepsia are small but reasonably consistent. The active compounds are cynarin and chlorogenic acid.
How to take it
- One capsule with your largest or richest meal
- Take it with the meal, not after — bile is most useful while the fat is arriving
- Artichoke is in the daisy family. Skip it if you react to ragweed, marigolds or chamomile
- Not for anyone with gallstones or a bile duct obstruction — increasing bile flow is exactly the wrong move there. Ask a doctor first
On the label
- 500 mg artichoke extract per capsule
- Single ingredient
- 30 capsules or 120 capsules
What this is not
- Not a liver detox
- Not a weight-loss product
- Not for use with gallstones without medical advice
The straight answer
The gallstone caution is the part worth reading twice. Artichoke works by making your gallbladder push more bile, and if there is a stone in the way that is a genuinely bad idea. For everyone else it is one of the more mechanistically sensible things in this category.
