What it's for

Glutathione is the body's principal internal antioxidant, built from cysteine, glycine and glutamate, and it does genuinely important work inside cells. The complication is that swallowing it is close to the least efficient way of getting more: oral glutathione is largely broken down in the gut before it reaches the bloodstream, which is why supplements aiming at glutathione often use NAC — a precursor your body can actually build from — instead.

The skin-lightening use rests on a small number of small studies, mostly short and mostly from one region. Any effect reported was slight and reversed when people stopped. That is a long way from what the packaging implies.

How to take it

• Two gummies daily, any time
• Contains sugar and hydrolysed collagen — not one for anyone avoiding either
• Do not expect a visible change in skin tone. If that is what you are after, daily sun protection does more than any supplement on this site
• Never inject anything sold as a supplement. Injectable glutathione marketed for skin lightening has been the subject of safety warnings and is a different and far riskier proposition than a gummy
