What it's for

Astaxanthin is the carotenoid that makes salmon and flamingos pink. It is a notably powerful antioxidant that, unlike most, can sit across the whole cell membrane. It is studied for skin elasticity and UV resilience, eye fatigue, joint comfort and exercise recovery. Most of those trials used 4 to 12 mg, so 24 mg is above rather than within the usual range.

How to take it

• Take with food containing fat — it is fat-soluble and poorly absorbed without
• Consider every other day if you are new to it, given the dose
• Skin studies generally ran eight to sixteen weeks
• At high doses it can give skin a faint orange tint, which is harmless and reverses
